By Jeff Moore

The importance of a living will is often under estimated with many thinking that one way or the other they will be taken care of. There spouse automatically gets power of attorney so he or she will know what’s best. This a common mistake leading many into a nightmare once the need for a will or living will arises.

It is crucial that everyone realizes what stress can do to someone, especially the stress of a loved one’s life dangling on a limb. Are you sure they will make the right choices for you, or even that you will make the right for them? It is this question that makes a living will so important. A living will can be your only voice when you wouldn’t otherwise have one. No one ever believes it could happen to them which makes this even more important. In the perfect world we could tell our loved ones what we want and they would do exactly as we say, however our world is not perfect. Most importantly, in the eyes of the law, what will the doctor believe? What if your family disagrees on what may be best for you? What if your family just doesn’t know what to do and waste precious time trying to figure it out? These are all things that happen every single day. A living will can make your decisions clear and make sure that you get the care you actually want.

Some people have a lawyer draft a will and living will. Others attempt to make there own. There are many websites offering forms that you can download and fill in. Online forms,do it yourself wills and even lawyer prepared living wills can and do get contested. One of the most important things to remember about a will is to have one, no matter what process you choose. The other thing to remember about a will is to keep it,insurance papers and other important documents where they can be found, not hidden where they might be lost or dis guarded.
