Welcome Residents and Home Owners of Bell
Canyon, CA.
Bell Canyon story: (excerpts from the
Bell Canyon Internet
Committee):
Accessible only from the West San Fernando
Valley side, but officially a
Ventura County
community;
Bell Canyon is a Southern
California private and gated residential
community with a rich history, nestled in a
spectacular setting. It is a horse lovers
community with many of it's resident having
extensive equestrian facilities [Bell
Canyon Trails Map]. Guarding the
entrance to Bell Canyon is a jagged sandstone,
which served as an ancient shrine to the
Chumash Indians.
They called it 'Cwaya
Cuquele' meaning 'the feathered banner is
waving'. The village of Huwam was located at the
base of Castle Peak, and research shows that
there was continuous habitation of the area for
more than 2,000 years.
Until 1967 Bell Canyon was
a working cattle ranch. The Equestrian Center
was built and in operation
beginning in the fall of 1968. This means that
the horses housed at the new center were
actually the first residents of Bell Canyon. The
canyon land was purchased by a partnership of
the Spruce Land Corporation and Boise-Cascade.
Several years later a new subdivision called
'Woodland Hills Country Estates' was opened.
Within ten days almost all the 700 home sites
were sold. In the fall of 1969, the new property
owners took over the association and renamed the
development 'Bell Canyon'.
Bell Canyon was named after Charles A. Bell (a
lawyer), who was Justice of the Peace of
Calabasas in 1906. It’s been said that he lost
his right arm in a gun battle while raiding a
moon-shiner in 1887.
Today, residents enjoy
Bell Canyon in much the same as did the
Chumas.
The sunsets are
awe-inspiring, the natural surroundings
breathtaking, and the wildlife has remained
seemingly undeterred by all the new neighbors.
Keeping it that way has been the mission of the
Bell Canyon Association and the many community
volunteers who give their time and energy to
making Bell Canyon an enjoyable community.
